Assisi is one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations. It was the birthplace of St. Francis, who is the patron saint of Italy and the founder of the Franciscan Order. As such, Assisi is an extremely popular destination for religious pilgrims.
Besides the religious aspect of Assisi, it is also a beautiful Umbrian town with much to offer. As a large tourist destination, the streets are lined with shops selling all kinds of things from clothing to souvenirs.
High atop the hill, the 14th century Rocca Maggiore castle is another 'don't miss' in Assisi.
Because of the religious and historical importance of Assisi, the United Nations has designated Assisi as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
