While Deruta is a beautiful little town, it is world famous for one thing: CERAMICS. And they are considered among the finest in the world. Due to the fact that they have excellent local clay, Deruta has been all about ceramics since the middle ages. Furthermore, their artistic style is completely unique to the point that one knows the Deruta style as soon as they see it... and there are many copies out there.
Each factory here is really little more than a small artisan studio, each going back many generations. Any of them is worth a visit. Additionally, you will typically find excellent prices here compared to the towns of Assisi, Perugia, and Orvieto.
