The answer to this is relative. Naturally, anything can happen anywhere. But the area around where your hotel is located is a very safe part of town. There is always police stationing in Piazza Maggiore, being the heart of the tourist zone. Like all big cities it has its good and its bad areas - but there’s no ‘gang culture’ making tourism unsafe.
