If you are looking to learn some Italian before your trip, we really don't like the standard 'Learn a language' courses, because they tend to teach you phrases that are really not used... so you would be just as well simply speaking English in most cases.
That said, be sure you bring a smart phone, and download some of the many English to Italian apps out there. They really can help come through in a pinch!
