Montalcino is without question one of the top stops for anyone touring Tuscan wine country. Their Brunello is considered one of the world's best wines, and visitors can buy this wine here for a fraction of what they pay back home.
It is a Tuscan hilltown of exceptional beauty that produces what is considered by many wine connoisseurs to be among Italy's absolute best red wines: Brunello di Montalcino. Also known for 'Rosso di Montalcino', which is also called 'Baby Brunello'.
* Thousands of tourists book day tours from Florence to this town for visits to cellars and vineyards, but it should be noted that Montalcino is much closer to our home base at Soriano than it is to Florence, so if your itinerary includes a stopover in Florence, you should consider visiting this area from Soriano instead.
Some of our favorite stops here include Croce di Mezzo Winery and Casanova di Neri. It is worth noting that just outside of Montalcino you will find the Banfi winery, which is one of the best known wineries internationally (We see their wine regularly even in supermarkets in the states). While beautiful, it is likely the most touristy thing in the area.
Most of our Tuscany, Lazio, and and Umbria based Cooking and Culinary Tours visit Montalcino. Most include one or two winery visits, a visit to the abbey, and lunch.
Getting There
You will not be able to reach this destination by train. so you will need a car to get here or a tour that visits this location.
If you are not coming on one of our tours, you can find it by taking the Chiusi exit from the A1 Autostrada, then follow the signs. The drive is arguably one of the most beautiful in Italy, as you take the winding Orcia Valley Wine Trail.

Need to Know
While beautiful, Montalcino is far from just about everything.
If you will be staying in Siena, that would be the best place from which to launch a day trip here.
While here, be sure to also visit nearby Pienza.
