A Lifelong Search for the Real: A Professional Journey in Three Acts

Michael's career is the story of a man born into a world of artifice who spent his life trying to find - and then build - something real.

Act I: The Revelation (A Search for Meaning)

Michael's journey was forged in tragedy. He grew up in the gilded cage of 1980s Los Angeles wealth, a world where drugs were rampant and misery was a close companion to money. He watched this world consume those around him; in a short time, his father, his brother, and several friends were lost to alcoholism, drugs, accidents, and suicide. In 1983, the death of his father left him a multi-millionaire at 17, but the inheritance only amplified a profound sense of hollowness.

That same year, a trip to Italy presented a different path. An experience in a simple, one-room Italian home revealed a world of incredible simplicity and joy he had never known. From 1985 to 1986, he made an extraordinary choice: he left his Porsche, home in the Hollywood Hills, and designer clothes behind in favor of a $150-a-month apartment and a $1,000 used car in a small Italian town. This period fundamentally rewired his understanding of value, happiness, and a life well-lived, setting the stage for everything to come.

Act II: Earning the Real (Forging a Futurist)

In 1986, Michael returned to Los Angeles, driven by an overwhelming need to feel worthy of his inheritance and to build something real on his own terms. He proved to be a natural serial entrepreneur, starting and profitably selling several companies, including a successful courier service and a motorcycle export business.

In 1992, he founded a tech company from his garage, pioneering e-commerce years before the internet became mainstream. He developed the first websites for giants like Nike and the US Navy. His company's software, AddWeb, the first comprehensive professional SEO software suite, became a top 2% seller in the US.

Michael wasn't just a business executive - he was a complete digital architect. As both CEO and hands-on developer, he personally coded AddWeb in Object Pascaal, and eventually Java while designing the user interfaces that made complex SEO and server software accessible to non-technical users. His early web design work for clients like Nike required pioneering new approaches to digital marketing before best practices even existed. This rare combination of coding expertise, visual design, marketing strategy, and edge technology adoption gave him an intimate understanding of how digital transformation actually works - from the database layer to the user experience to the marketing funnel. This comprehensive technical foundation now informs his strategic approach to AI implementation and leadership in travel, where he understands not just what the technology can do, but how to design human-centered experiences around it.

This work culminated in a stunning achievement in 2001 when his lean, 21-person team won the coveted "Best of eBusiness" award at COMDEX - which at the time was the undisputed center of the technology universe, the industry's equivalent of winning the World Cup.

Throughout this ascent, he established an uncanny reputation for seeing what was real on the horizon. He was on the record in the late 90s forecasting streaming TV, internet-connected phones, and even the core concepts that drop apps like Waze and technologies like VoIP, while vocally warning that the dot-com bubble's valuations were not based in reality.

Act III: Building the Real (A Business with Soul)

Even after his success, the call of Italy remained. In 2006, he founded Culture Discovery Vacations (CDV) to finally share the "one-room experience." The tech world pulled him back for one final test in 2007, when as a turnaround specialist for a large software company, his advice to embrace the reality of the new iPhone and e-commerce with digital asset management was rejected. He walked away on principle. One year later, the company filed for bankruptcy.

By 2008, he had left the tech world and speaking circuit behind for good. He returned to his true mission, applying his entire history as a tech pioneer, marketer, and designer to the incredibly low-tech travel industry. His personal transformation became the blueprint for the company's "anti-luxury" philosophy. He had come full circle, finally building a business that was not just successful, but had a soul.

The Next Frontier: AI and the Search for the Real

Today, Michael is applying the same futurist lens to the next great disruptor: Artificial Intelligence. He argues that while most companies are focused on AI's utility, they are missing its profound human impact. His thesis is simple: AI will make transactional services abundant and virtually free, causing the value of genuine, hard-to-replicate human connection to skyrocket.

Rather than just using off-the-shelf AI, he develops proprietary models designed not to replace his team, but to automate the unreal - the non-essential tasks - freeing them up to double-down on the personal relationships that are the core of the "anti-luxury" experience and the currency of the future.
